Planetside by Michael Mammay6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() To mark the release of The Misfit Soldier, Michael Mammay stopped by the site to tell us all about the book, his biggest military sci-fi pet peeves, and what science fiction characters from other stories he’d want on his squad if he were undertaking a borderline insane mission like the one his characters take in the book. I had a blast reading this book you can find my full spoiler-free review for it here. But as with any good heist novel, there’s plenty more to the story than the mission. When one of Sergeant Gas Gastovsky’s soldiers is left behind on a war-torn planet, he assembles an eclectic team of misfits to go after the missing man. The Misfit Soldier is a heist novel, combining elements more common to stories like Ocean’s Eleven with the trappings of military sci-fi. With his fourth book, The Misfit Soldier, Mammay is taking things a step further. ![]() They were great books, and elicited just as many laughs as gasps. ![]() He followed up with two sequels, Spaceside(2019) and Colonyside(2020), which further expanded Butler’s story. Michael Mammay broke onto the military sci-fi scene in 2018 with his novel Planetside, which followed semi-retired colonel Carl Butler as he unraveled a conspiracy with galaxy-wide implications. ![]() While that reputation is sometimes well-earned, it’s not always the case. Military science fiction often gets a rap for being very serious and filled with heavy ideas and themes. ![]()

NOS4A2 by Joe Hill6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Like Nosferatu, geddit? Sheesh, what uninspired “cryptic” wordplay. I didn’t know it when I picked it up but apparently The Wraith: Welcome to Christmasland is a sequel/prequel (as in it was published after but the story is set before) to Joe Hill’s prose novel NOS4A2. If you wish to see more of my most recent book and movie reviews, visit Don’t stop for clothes, money, or the family pet just run like the devil is at your heels.because he is. showing up with that car and that license plate. You know how there are those signs up in towns that proclaim a sister city In Russia, or China, or Thailand? Well if Christmasland is the sister city to Disneyland than Disneyland is in Heaven and Christmasland is in Hell. Manx induces the child to step into the Wraith and he spirits them away to Christmasland. In his case, that generally means he is taken to an abused child who needs to be separated from their parents. Manx drives a Rolls Royce Silver Wraith that is actually a key that takes him through a portal to the place he needs to be. Somehow it is so much more stomach churning to think that there were two other Manx’s before this one. To entice me even further he tells the backstory of the diabolic, Christmasland caretaker, Charles Manx III. He trapped me like a fly in a Brown Recluse Spider web with this one because Wraith is actually a prequel to his outstanding novel NOS4A2. I wouldn’t say I’ve been intentionally ignoring Joe Hill’s graphic novels, have been. ![]()

Hollywood dirt by alessandra torre6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Values, institutions, development, and freedom are all closely interrelated, and Sen links them together in an elegant analytical framework. Social institutions like markets, political parties, legislatures, the judiciary, and the media contribute to development by enhancing individual freedom and are in turn sustained by social values. ![]() The main purpose of development is to spread freedom and its 'thousand charms' to the unfree citizens.įreedom, Sen persuasively argues, is at once the ultimate goal of social and economic arrangements and the most efficient means of realizing general welfare. Even if they are not technically slaves, they are denied elementary freedoms and remain imprisoned in one way or another by economic poverty, social deprivation, political tyranny or cultural authoritarianism. In Development as Freedom Amartya Sen explains how in a world of unprecedented increase in overall opulence millions of people living in the Third World are still unfree. ![]()

Chaos a new science6/25/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() We often say observations are chaotic when there is no discernible regularity or Through measurement, and that these observations or measurements vary unpredictably. For example, he quotes Philip Holmes (apparently defining "chaotic") as, "The complicated aperiodic attracting orbits of certain, usually low-dimensional dynamical systems." Similarly, he quotes Bai-Lin Hao describing chaos (roughly) as "a kind of order without periodicity." Gleick (1988, p. 306) notes that "No one could quite agree on the word itself," and so instead gives descriptions from a number of practitioners in the field. In fact, it is much easier to list properties that a system described as "chaotic" has rather than to give a precise definition of chaos. ![]()
